My Top 20 Travel Songs

Even though I plan on walking the Camino de Santiago with a fairly minimalist pack, in this day and age minimalism still allows for a little bit of technology. That means I’m taking along my iPad so I can blog from the albergues and it most certainly means I’m taking my iPhone and some headphones so I can listen to music as I’m walking across the Spanish countryside.

Many of the songs listed here are obviously about travel. Gomez’s “See the World” and Neutral Milk Hotel’s “In The Aeroplane Over the Sea” were obvious choices. I have fond memories listening to NMH as I flew across the ocean for the first time on a red eye flight to London.

Other choices on this playlist are less likely to be seen on other travel playlists around the internet. That’s mainly because they’re songs that make me feel good as I’m plodding along, songs like “Window” by The Album Leaf and “What Do You Go Home To?” by Explosions In The Sky are purely instrumental, but they put me in the right frame of mind to truly experience my surroundings (or take a nap in a hammock). Rankings are fairly arbitrary, but I gave them rankings all the same. Feel free to dispute/discuss in the comments. I’ll be adding to the playlist as the suggestions roll in.

  1. Hm, that’s a great question. Your list looks good and everyone else’s additions are good too.

I’d say I rarely listened to music on the Camino. I tended to lean more towards to conversations with my other peregrinos and nature. I tried to stay unplugged as much as possible. That didn’t always happen though lol.

Now, that being said, at times in the mother f’in Meseta as we called it and some of the more challenging pushes up hills or into towns, I would plug in to get the push. My go to was a mix of Imagine Dragons, Passion Pit, Cold Play, OneRepublic and a variety of Spanish speaking artists.

Hope that helps! Your departure date is almost here, I can’t wait to follow the blog.
